A podcast is an Internet Presentation of an Audio or Video file. The contents of a Podcast can be multi media: Sound, speech, text, images, slide shows, animations, video etc. (See the samples in the Podcast directory. or in Podcast Marketing samples.)
A podcast file is distributed over the Internet. Hundert of thousands of people can listen or watch 'whenever' they want to! It sounds like broadcast 'On Demand'. (In other, more technical words: A podcast is a multimedia file distributed over the Internet using syndication feeds, for playback on mobile devices and personal computers.)
Some people say, podcasting will revolutionize the traditional broadcasting world as the Internet itself has done it with the communication world.
Podcasting can also be called "Internet Radio' or "Internet Television,' will with the time replace traditional broadcasting as we know it today.
The term 'Podcast', as originally coined by Ben Hammersley in an article in the Guardian on February 12, 2004 was meant as a portmanteau of "broadcasting" and "iPod". Like 'radio', it can mean both the content and the method of delivery; the latter may also be termed podcasting. The host or author of a podcast is often called a podcaster.
Though podcasters' web sites may also offer direct download or streaming of their content, a podcast is distinguished from other digital audio formats by its ability to be downloaded automatically using software capable of reading feed formats such as RSS or Atom.
XML, RSS, ATOM, RDF…
You've seen these acronyms and icons emerge with the rising popularity of syndicated content online, but might not yet realize the big opportunity as a publisher of feeds. The ability to subscribe to content on the Web has introduced a promising new delivery channel and with it, more ways for you to extend your reach online. We can help you : Contact Us
What is the difference between an Audio-Visual file and a podcast?
It is important to understand that a Podcast is not at all similar to a linked Audio-Visual file from your web site. An Audio-Visual is a pretty lame, inactive media file which is not utilizing the publishing, distribution and subscription capabilities of a Podcast. However, we have the technologies to make your old Audio-Visual file active as a Podcast. Contact us!
